Which comes first, the lyrics or the music? With JA the music is invariably written first. Certain lyric phrases take root based upon their feel and also upon their sound (regardless of what the words mean). These phrases become the seed from which the full lyrics to the song crystallize. From JA's point of view, coming up with music is easy. The toil of songwriting is crafting lyrics to match the music. So the lyrics you read here are not his natural flow. They are the end result of much nose-to-the-grindstonge struggles—a price to be paid for bringing a melody to its full fruition. Enjoy!
